Abstract

The establishment of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) in the mid-20th century cannot be understood only as the result of the national struggle that took place in the archipelago. The birth of Indonesia is part of a long, complex, and interconnected world history process, which lasted for centuries. This article aims to uncover the relationship between changes in the structure of the world's political, economic, technological, thought, and international relations since the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century to the formation of the sovereign Indonesian state. The study is conducted with a historical approach and a global historical perspective, placing changes in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the archipelago as part of a series of transformations that affect each other. The main argument of this article is that the historical relationship from the fall of Rome to the birth of the Republic of Indonesia is not a direct cause-and-effect relationship, but a historical relationship formed through a number of transformation chains. The Republic of Indonesia is the result of the interaction between world changes and the political actions of the Indonesian people themselves. Global history provides structure and opportunities, but the Indonesian nation through organization, ideology, diplomacy, and struggle determines the direction of this change.
