Sosial Budaya Masyarakat Nias: Analisis Makna Tradisi Lompat Batu Di Desa Bawamataluo

Abstrak

This study examines the socio-cultural history of the Nias people through an analysis of the meaning of the stone jumping tradition (Hombo Batu) in Bawamataluo Village, South Nias Regency. The Hombo Batu tradition is one of the cultural heritages of the Nias people that has historical, social, religious, and philosophical values. In the past, this tradition functioned as a means of physical and mental training for young people in facing inter-village wars and as a symbol of transition to adulthood. Over time, the function of Hombo Batu has transformed into a cultural identity and tourist attraction that introduces the Nias people to the outside world. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach to understand the meaning of the Hombo Batu tradition in the lives of the people of Bawamataluo Village. Data were obtained through a literature review of various relevant scientific sources. The results of the study indicate that the Hombo Batu tradition contains values of courage, discipline, responsibility, solidarity, respect for ancestors, and a fighting spirit in facing life's challenges. In addition, this tradition functions as a medium for inheriting the history of the formation of cultural identity, a social glue, and a means of building historical awareness of the younger generation Amidst the currents of modernization and globalization, preserving Hombo Batu has become crucial for maintaining the socio-cultural existence of the Nias people while strengthening the local identity passed down through generations.
